What impact will the NCAA denying UConn's final appeal of its 2013 post-season ban have on the men's basketball program?

Well, junior Alex Oriakhi recently decided to transfer before learning of the failed final appeal.

The UConn coaching staff's recruting efforts have been hampered for months because of the potential post-season ban. High-level recruits have crossed the Huskies off their list.

The post-season ban also will be a factor in determining whether sophomore Jeremy Lamb and freshman Andre Drummond return next season or leave school early for the NBA.

But their draft status will have a bigger impact. They're both projected to be lotter picks.

And what about coach Jim Calhoun?

You'd think the post-season ban might just help convince Calhoun to return. He loves a challenge. And he doesn't want to leave the program in a tough spot.

Athletic director Warde Manuel was asked about the impact of the post-season ban on Calhoun's decision.

"Obviously, Jim is not happy about it and about where we find ourselves in the men's basketball program," Manuel said. "Beyond that, Jim and I have not talked about any impact of this on his deicison or my deicison or any part of the conversation about whether or not he will be here.

"Jim is our coach and Jim is committed to working to ensure that the student-athletes continue to do what they're doing now, and that is to focus academically and do what they need to do to be successful in the class room and and on the court."

Manuel added that he was not going to discuss any conversations that he had with Calhoun.

Only if the NCAA decides to change the Academic Progress Rate reporting dates will the Huskies have a chance to play in the 2013 post-season. The NCAA may discuss that matter later this month or wait until July.
