A breakfast that hits the spot at DJ’s Campus Kitchen

I’ve always been a morning person. I’m the guy who jumps out of bed at 5:30 a.m. and gleefully starts up the coffee maker, the kind of neighbor getting his lawnmower going before 9.

With that said, it’s a given that I also love a good diner or breakfast spot. I got a taste of just that at DJ’s Campus Kitchen on Williams Street in New London this morning.

I’m the type who enjoys a classic, no frills kind of breakfast place. Once in New York, I was brought to this obscene breakfast place in midtown that was comparable to eating aboard the ship in 2001: A Space Odyssey. I was somewhat surprised when they brought me a regular omelet instead of a little tray of space-age, multi-color nutrition pills.

Fortunately, DJ’s it what you might call a real “joint.” Staying true to the campus name, there are banners and jerseys hung around the dining room representing local teams from the Coast Guard Academy to Montville High.

Omelets at DJ’s range in price from $5.99 for a cheese omelet to $8.89 for a winter omelet: ham, bacon, sausage, cheese, a choice of homefries or grits and toast. Breakfast platters included the $4.99 “Cadet” with two eggs, two pancakes and two strips of bacon up to the “Admiral,” which at $8.99 included three eggs, choice of bacon or sausage, homefries or grits and French toast. Good luck walking out the door after that one!

I’ve been hooked on biscuits and gravy ever since I visited my wife’s family in Georgia for the first time seven years ago. Her grandmother made the meal every morning, and was instantly charmed when she saw me eat enough of her biscuits and gravy to feed three men.

DJ’s take on this classic was just what I like: fresh warm biscuits topped with a liberal serving of delicious thick gravy, bits of sausage and lots of black pepper.

There’s also something about eating biscuits and gravy that’s timeless. You feel almost like a frontiersman, waking up before dawn, brewing some coffee in an old fashioned percolator and having some biscuits and gravy right before you head out into the untamed elements.

With a side of two scrambled eggs, orange juice and tax, my meal came to $9.85, which seemed about right to me.

The serving sizes at DJ’s were also well worth the price (see picture two to get a load of the oversized pancakes).

The only downside I could find was if you finished your meal, you might just need to head straight home and back into bed.
