Howdy,

So Saturday was daffy. Windham upset Ledyard. Torrington stunned defending Class S champion Holy Cross of Waterbury. And St. Joseph of Trumbull rallied from a two-touchdown deficit and edged previously unbeaten Darien in double overtime.

There was one thing all those games had in common — they were played in the daytime.

Yeah, playing under the Friday night lights is great and all. We here at Polecat HQ love the night and prefer the cover of darkness to the bright, blinding sun of the daytime.

Saturday afternoon games are awesome, though. Many of us at Polecat HQ were raised on them and remember those days fondly.

It's a shame that Saturday games have become the exception instead of the norm. It wasn't too long ago that Saturdays gave you the chance to see two games instead of one. You'd hit a late morning game (were looking at you, Bill Mignault), and then jet to another in the afternoon.

There are worse ways to start a Saturday than drinking a cup of coffee and inhaling a breakfast sandwich while driving to a morning football game.

Saturday provided the first wacky day of the young football season. In addition to the aforementioned upsets, Norwich Free Academy defeated Fitch in a back-and-forth battle of unbeatens. Naugatuck scored SEVENTY POINTS. And Nonnewaug of Woodbury won its first game in over four years.

We'd like to think it was the Saturday afternoon sunlight that was responsible for all of the craziness

Here's a rundown on how the Top 10 in The Day's state coaches fared this weekend:

1. Xavier beat Fairfield Prep Saturday, 35-14, its 29th straight win. Pat Pickens of Hearst, Inc. and the urbane Jim Bransfield of the Middletown Press reporting.

2. Ansonia routed Derby Thursday, 48-6, in the 90th meeting between The Valley neighbors. Kyle Brennan of the Waterbury Republican American, Ryan Flynn of Hearst, Inc. and Mike Pucci of the New Haven Register reporting:

3. Hand dealt Cheshire its first loss Friday, 35-7. Dave Phillips reports for the New Haven Register. The grizzled Ted Moynihan of the Meriden Record-Journal and Mark Jaffee reporting.

3. Staples cruised to a 55-14 win over McMahon Friday. Cameron Martin of Hearst Inc. and Tom Evans of The Hour reporting:

5. Windsor blitzed Bristol Eastern Saturday, 41-0. Scroll down to the eighth game in the Hartford Courant's roundup:

6. Masuk thrashed Immaculate of Danbury Saturday, 54-8. Go to the second page of Hearst Inc.'s roundup.

6. West Haven knocked off rival Notre Dame of West Haven Friday, 34-13. Mike Madera reporting for the New Haven Register.

8. Greenwich took the week off.

9. Glastonbury bounced Conard of West Hartford Saturday, 35-6. You'll have to settle for a mere blurb in the Hartford Courant.

10. Berlin routed Tolland Saturday, 55-13. The Herald's Chris McLaughlin reporting:

Vaya con dios….
