It’s not too often that we review a fast food place here on the Dining Blog, but I’m a firm believer in giving credit when credit is due.
I became aware recently that Popeye’s—known for its fried chicken—also makes an impressive shrimp Po’ Boy. Rick Koster, our arts writer and professor emeritus of Louisiana culture, told me this sandwich is actually quite good.
So after covering the New London/North Haven football game last night, I swung through the Colman Street Popeye’s drive through on my way back to the office (speedy and friendly service I might add).
I have to say this was a delicious sandwich. It came on a soft baguette, with small crispy fried shrimp, lettuce, a mayonnaise-type sauce and pickles. The shrimp was not exactly “fresh,” a little rubbery to be honest. But, hey, this is Popeye’s. And if the aim of the restaurant is to deliver tasty food fast, then this sandwich certainly accomplishes that.
I also want to give a tip of my hat to the Cajun fries at Popeye’s. They were the perfect thickness, thicker cut than McDonald’s but not as potatoie as Wendy’s. The seasoning put these fries over the threshold and into the “superior” category.
So, if you want, you can turn up your nose at this fast food suggestion. But if you’re in the mood for a good culinary experience under $10, give it a try. I have a feeling you’ll like it more than you think.
