Status of UConn QB Whitmer is uncertain

Published November 26. 2012 4:00AM

The status of starting quarterback Chandler Whitmer won't be known until Tuesday, UConn football coach Paul Pasqualoni said during his weekly Sunday conference call.

Whitmer, a junior college transfer who has started every game this season for the Huskies, left Saturday's 23-20 triple overtime upset victory over Louisville in the fourth quarter with an apparent concussion and didn't return.

Pasqualoni said Whitmer was going to be held out of Sunday's practice and UConn doesn't practice today, so Pasqualoni won't know until Tuesday at the earliest whether or not Whitmer will be available for Saturday's important regular-season finale against Cincinnati at Rentschler Field.

If Whitmer is unable to go, senior Johnny McEntee, the 2011 starter, will start for the Huskies.

The Big East announced Sunday the UConn-Cincinnati game will be start at 3:30 p.m. and be televised nationally on ABC (Ch. 8 locally). The Huskies (5-6, 2-4) can become bowl eligible and likely earn a bowl bid by defeating the Bearcats. In addition to Whitmer's injury, senior defensive end Trevardo Williams, who sacked Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater three times, injured his right ankle. Williams also was not expected to practice Sunday.
