Montville - A Staten Island man wanted here for escaping a local community release program back in 2002 was extradited Tuesday from a Buffalo, N.Y., prison to face charges.

John Cruz, 45, was sentenced on Oct. 22, 1999, to five years in prison for first-degree robbery out of the state police Troop D jurisdiction. He was charged Tuesday by state police with first-degree escape from a correctional institution.

According to the state Department of Correction, Cruz escaped from a local community release program in December of 2002. Neither the location nor the town where he escaped from was available.

Cruz was being held in lieu of a $500,000 bond pending his arraignment today in Norwich Superior Court.
