Dairy farmer won some relief Jan. 1 along with taxpayers when Congress passed a measure to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff.
U.S. Rep Joe Courtney, D-2nd District, said Thursday that the American Taxpayer Relief Act included a nine-month extension of the Milk Income Loss Contract program, which compensates farmers when milk prices decline. It also provides for retroactive payments for a period when no farm bill was in place.
Courtney, who is co-chairman of the Congressional Dairy Farmers Caucus and a member of the House Agriculture Committee, blamed "Republicans' inaction on the farm bill" for the delay in approving dairy farmers' benefits.
