Holocaust Commemoration Program

Sunday   TIME:  4:00 pm to

Eastern CT will observe Yom HaShoah with a Holocaust Commemoration program sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Eastern Connecticut and area synagogues. It is free and open to everyone in the community.
Judith Deglin of Norwich, whose late mother, Charlotte Strauss Hopfer, escaped Germany just before the war, is chairing this year’s commemoration. She recently traveled to Alzey, Germany, the birthplace of her mother and Aunt Marianne, to participate in the placing of “stumbling stones” in front the Strauss home. Marianne Strauss died in Treblinka in 1942 at the age of 14.
Reb Julius Rabinowitz, spiritual leader of Beth Jacob, and a child of survivors will speak, for the first time ever, about his parents and their experiences during the war. His talk is titled “Confession of a Child of Survivors.”
Survivors and children of survivors will light candles and be accompanied to the candelabra by students of the Encountering Survivors program and the Jewish Community High School.
Music for the commemoration has been arranged by Sherry Barnes, Cantorial Soloist at Temple Emanu-El, with the cooperation of the Jewish Community Choir, Roz Etra, Henry Savin, and Barry Weiner.
