ESSEX-The Spinners Show Their Stuff

Before the mass manufacturing of textiles, the processing of raw materials into fabric was much more labor intensive. After the fibers are gathered and prepared, they need to be spun into thread. (Think Sleeping Beauty’s spinning wheel.) Spinning fibers into a strong and uniform thread or yarn requires skill, practice and patience. The Spinners will be spinning their stuff at Hill’s Academy on November 11, 2012 from 1-4 pm. Stop by, sit and chit chat awhile as you watch the rhythmic, almost hypnotizing process of turning rough fiber material into sleek strands. The Spinners are looking forward to sharing their passion with you!

Dinotopia: Art, Science, and Imagination
Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street, New London, CT
the original artwork of James Gurney, the author and illustrator of Dinotopia, an illustrated book series that tells the story of an island where humans and sentient dinosaurs live together in harmony.
On view through February 2, the exhibition brings together paintings from Gurney’s well-loved books A Land Apart From Time, The World Beneath, Journey to Chandara, and First Flight, along with sketches and maquettes from Gurney’s studio. Dinosaur specimens from the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, including a Deinonychus skull and a Tyrannosaurus tooth, will complement the paintings and illuminate the science behind Gurney’s art. The Clinton Tree Committee is seeking artwork for the Seventh Annual Art Show. There will be a new theme this year: THE TREES OF CONNECTICUT. Artists are encouraged to submit paintings and photographs of their favorite Connecticut trees. Submissions must be original artwork and be ready to hang. A prize will be awarded to the work voted “People’s Choice “.
The show will be held at the Henry Carter Hull Library, 10 Killingworth Turnpike, Clinton. It will run from November 1 – November 30.
The mission of the Clinton Tree Committee is to protect our valuable urban forest, and to educate Clinton residents about the planting and care of trees. The tree ordinance approved in 1998, established the guidelines for the planting, maintenance and removal of town trees.

All-Star Driver to support Connecticut Food Bank by donating turkeys

All-Star Driver gives back to the North Haven community
All-Star Driver, a family-owned and operated driving school based in Watertown, Conn. is proposing a turkey challenge to ensure that Connecticut residents in need will be able to celebrate Thanksgiving this year. If 104 frozen turkeys are donated during the Friends of Maze Food Drive being held outside Big Y, 345 Washington Ave., in North Haven from 7am - 7pm on Sunday, November 11 and Monday, November 12, All-Star Driver will match the donation and contribute another 104 turkeys to the drive. In order to meet the goal, turkey donations from the public must be received by 12noon on Monday, November 12.
