Dinotopia: Art, Science, and Imagination
Lyman Allyn Art Museum, 625 Williams Street, New London, CT
the original artwork of James Gurney, the author and illustrator of Dinotopia, an illustrated book series that tells the story of an island where humans and sentient dinosaurs live together in harmony.
On view through February 2, the exhibition brings together paintings from Gurney’s well-loved books A Land Apart From Time, The World Beneath, Journey to Chandara, and First Flight, along with sketches and maquettes from Gurney’s studio. Dinosaur specimens from the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, including a Deinonychus skull and a Tyrannosaurus tooth, will complement the paintings and illuminate the science behind Gurney’s art. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. every Sunday, stroll through the village while shopping the market of local growers and producers of artisan baked goods, jams and jellies, farmstead cheese, fall vegetables, fresh fish and meats.
To add to the holiday spirit, Chester shops, restaurants and galleries will be dressed up in their holiday finery and offering special events, such as holiday storytelling, food tastings, live music, sales, and much more. Activities for kids and their families will include art activities, dough ornament making, and a weekly treasure hunt. Free parking is available.

19th Annual Holiday Train Show

The family-friendly Holiday Train Show exhibit is back at the Connecticut River Museum in Essex for its nineteenth year of fun for all ages. Train artist Steve Cryan has worked his magic again with more trains, new scenery, and lots of surprises to be found in the fully operational 26-foot model train layout. Visitors are challenged to find a scavenger list of various objects hidden within the settings while the very young can get hands-on at the expanded American Flyer and Lionel train layout designed for toddler size viewing. The exhibit is a true locomotive extravaganza and a perfect outing for train fans and all who are young at heart. Sponsored by Liberty Bank, The Safety Zone and Valley Courier, the exhibit runs through February 10, 2013.

"Dear Santa", a letter writing workshop

On Sunday, Dec. 2 from 3-5pm we will be writing our letters to Santa! If you believe, bring your little one to the store for a festive hour between the Madison Town Santa Paws Parade and the Tree lighting ceremony!
Each child will spend a few minutes thinking about what they want to put in their letter to Santa, and share with each other their favorite toy or book. We will work to help them articulate a nice letter, address their envelope and send off to the North Pole! Children will be encouraged to think about saying thank you to Santa, and talk about what it means to give. Each child will take home a thank you card to write to Santa after Christmas!
