This summer the Literacy Volunteers of Washington County welcomes Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner A. Scott Berg to speak in Westerly as part of the Joyce S. Ahern Authors’ Series. This event takes place on Thursday evening July 17 at the historic Watch Hill Chapel with a reception to follow at the Ocean House. This evening will support literacy programs for adults in southern Rhode Island and southeastern Connecticut. Tickets for the event and reception are available through the Literacy Volunteers of Washington County website, http://www.literacywashingtoncounty.org, at $50 for the presentation at The Watch Hill Chapel and an additional $30 for the Ocean House reception. The award-winning author of "Dating Jesus" will be in town for a reading and signing of her recently published biography, "Tempest-Tossed: The Spirit of Isabella Beecher Hooker." You may know Ms. Campbell as chair of the Journalism and Mass Communication Department at Central Connecticut State University, as well as a popular columnist at the Hartford Courant. On Saturday July 19 at 5 pm Stephen Yenser will speak at Merrill House in Stonington CT (Stephen Yenser, poet, critic and one of James Merrill's literary executors, speaks about James Merrill's Versions of 'Home'). Stephen Yenser's volumes of poems include The Fire in All Things, which won the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets, and Blue Guide. His new manuscript is Stone Fruit. He has written three critical books, including The Consuming Myth: The Work of James Merrill, and is co-editor of five volumes of Merrill's work. He is Distinguished Professor and Director of Creative Writing at UCLA.Please note: the event will take place on the 4th floor and is accessible by stairway only
