Contestants battle to the finish line after a mile along an barrier-strewn footpath, a climb over a wall, and a mile-long beach run (with more obstacles, including a couple dips into the Sound). Approximately 500 ready-and-raring participants tackled the first annual Run the Gauntlet 5K Race at Hammonasset Beach State Park on Sept. 30. The event featured a 3.1-mile race through hay bales, tires, water, cargo nets, and other obstacles. Organized by local retailer Trailblazer, the race benefits the Shoreline Greenway Trail, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a 25-mile biking and walking path spanning from Lighthouse Point in New Haven to Hammonasset Beach.
