The World Is Her Water Bowl

Dogs don't get a whole lot of variety in their diets. While the human members of our household have an entire pantry of options to choose from at meal time, the dogs get the same thing every day: kibble and water.

Barrett doesn't seem to get bored with this menu, but apparently Remy is some kind of beverage connoisseur. She has three bowls in the house to choose form, but she prefers her water to be moving.

When I fill her bowl from a pitcher, she laps directly out of the stream coming from the pitcher's spout. When I try to clean her off after a muddy romp in the woods, she bites at the hose. If I take her on a hike, she'll drink out of my water bottle or the hose from my CamelBak and ignore what I pour into her travel bowl.

Because of this preference, she often shows up in the bathroom when she hears flowing water. We've learned to keep the toilet lids closed tightly. Remy recently joined me while I was bathing my three-month old son Mason. She sniffed at the water coming out of the tap, but it was out of her reach unless she put her front feet in the tub. While she likes flowing water, she know enough not to get an accidental bath.

She took up her customary spot on the bathmat, a place she likes to sleep every now and then, and lay with her head on my leg. The sound of me pouring water on Mason roused her, and by craning her neck, she could just get the tip of her tongue between the cup of water and Mason's belly.

Every time I filled the cup and poured it over the boy, Remy lapped at the warm water. I'm sure some parenting book somewhere advises against mixing dog slobber with bath water, but the image was too entertaining for me to discourage her.
