The Smart Money

As with any vote, there seem to be some who want to play on their neighbors' fears and suspicion by throwing out inaccurate facts without checking-or worse. The Griswold Airport proposal is no different.

The town is doing this the professional way. It engaged Trust for Public Land (TPL), a national land conservation organization, to

negotiate the proposal over a year's time at no cost to the taxpayer. TPL hired not one but two licensed appraisers who determined the market value was more than the $9 million price ($9.65 and $10.5 million were the two appraised values). TPL commissioned an environmental survey and the town engineer and Duo Dickinson, a local architect, drafted functional concept plans for the site.

The other rumor seems to be that the developer can't build the condos because of financial troubles. The developer is financed primarily by one very wealthy financier who has the capability and the will to build. Make no mistake about it, Madison. We have a choice. We can vote "No" and have condos on the salt marshes next to Hammonasset State Park or vote "Yes" and conserve 42 acres of waterfront property for generations of Madisonians.

The smart money is voting "Yes" on this proposal.
