"Yes." That's my vote next month on the referendum to acquire the former Griswold airport land. If the Town of Madison owns it, we'll have guaranteed public access to a truly splendid property. I hope to share the marshland splendor with birders and ballplayers, tourists and townspeople, the very small (coffee bean snail), and the very tall (coastal forest).
Surely Madison has an abundance of "resident imagineers" who can devise a creative but prudent stewardship for this 42-acre treasure. By voting "Yes" to claim the treasure, we can open a town-wide conversation to figure out how it should look, sound, and feel. Let's not lose our chance.
For the record: I used to be against having more recreational fields in town. But now, given a choice between private backyards and public fields, I'll say "Yes" to the fields.
