The purchase of the Griswold property provides the Town of Madison with an extraordinary opportunity. We can create a multi-use facility for our residents now and in the future that will be second to none. We would provide a place to explore and experience nature in its natural setting on the majority of the land and at the same time create needed athletic facilities for the whole family.
The need for additional athletic fields has grown dramatically over the past 10 years. Currently, the town supports 5,300 athletes through the various school and sports leagues on 24 athletic fields. Of these fields, 17 are multi-sport fields, designed and constructed in an era when sports were played for a single season, i.e. baseball in the spring and soccer in the fall. Today, sports are year-round activities frequented by boys, girls, women, and men, including the largest senior softball league in the state. This has resulted in our inventory's becoming over-burdened with no time for restorative efforts for the Facilities Department.
The construction of new fields on the Griswold property will allow the town to continue to
enhance the level of programs it provides and at the same time provide the ability to rest and restore the existing fields.
