Day staff photographer Sean D. Elliot took this photo Thursday of Taftville volunteer firefighter Costa Konstantinidis sliding across the ice on the Shetucket River in Baltic to retrieve an inflatable water/snow tube.

The Baltic Fire Department was called to the scene when a passing state trooper spotted the tube in the river and was unable to discern whether or not there was a person in the water. The Norwich Underwater Search and Rescue team was called mutual aid to assist. It took Konstantinidis about half an hour to reach the tube.
