Souza is champ in 55 hurdles, long jump and is member of winning relay team for Rams

New Haven — Rodrigo Souza won the 55-meter hurdles (7.53 seconds), the long jump (21 feet, five 3/4 inches) and teamed with Jeremy King, Mike Sheehan and Zack Towne to win the 4x200 (1:35.26) as Old Saybrook High School won the Shoreline Conference boys' indoor track and field championships Saturday at the New Haven Athletic Center.

Old Saybroook had 89 points and Old Lyme was seventh (27).

King won the 55-meter dash (6.73) and was second in the long jump for the Rams. Their other place-winners were Zack Towne (second, 300; third, 600); Ryan Nunn (third, 1,600); Ben Kegler (third, shot put); Mike Sheehan (fourth, long jump); Spencer Arbige (fourth, 1,000); Luke D'Ambrosia (sixth, shot put); Mark Rubano, Joe Bouchard, Nick Santamaria and Arbige (third, 4x800); Jon Drobiarz, Chris Lee, Ryan Green and Nick Santamaria (fifth, 1,600 sprint medley relay); and Christian Webb, Drobiarz, Rubano and Arbidge (fourth, 4x400).

Will Ricker of Old Lyme won the 1,000 (2:33) and teamed with Pat Hallahan, Peer Fish and Jeff Winters to win the 1,600 sprint-medley relay (3:46.57). James Barri, Jamie Guadet, Matt Rasmussen and Pat Wilczynski were sixth in the 4x400.

In the girls' meet, Nora Brown of Old Saybrook won the 55 hurdles (9.03) and long jump (16-2).

East Hampton won the meet (100 points), Old Saybrook was second (74) and Old Lyme third (58).

Other place-winners for Old Saybrook were Marykate Czepiel (third, 1,000); Hillary Maxson (third, 1,600 and 3,200); Brianna Hanley (third, 300, and fifth, 55); Alyssa Giegerich (third, pole vault); Jenny Gamble (fourth, shot put); Alexis Henry (fifth, pole vault); Courtney MacNeil (sixth, 55); Samantha Cummins, Garnet McGlaughlin, Czepiel and Maxson (second, 4x800; third, 3,200); Katy Beezer, Christie D'Antonis, Cummins and McGlaughlin (third, 4x400); and Chiara Scarpelli, MacNeil, Cummins and McGlaughlin (sixth, 1,600 sprint-medley relay)

Tory McKnight of Old Lyme won the 600 (1:43.68) and teamed with Alina Byrne, Brittany Cowee and Sally Garland to win the 4x200 (1:53.20). Jenn Ross won the 1,000 (3:07.90) and was second in the 3,200, and Byrne, Cowee, McKnight and Ross won the 1,600 sprint-medley relay (4:29.93).

The Wildcats other place-winners were Byrne (third, 55) and Cowee (fourth, 300).

Girls' basketball

• Kastine Evans had 27 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals as Norwich Free Academy downed Glastonbury, 62-37. Jen Escobido had 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists for NFA (16-2) and Jahira Smith added 11 points.

• Karli Fiala scored 11 points as Hale-Ray of East Haddam beat Old Saybrook, 44-41, in the Shoreline Conference. Kelly Ratchford had 12 points for the Rams (6-9) and Amanda King added eight points.

Boys' basketball

• Plainfield outscored Griswold 18-4 in the second quarter and went on to win the nonleague game 48-33. Suthod Young had 15 points for Plainfield (8-7). Justin Daniels had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Wolverines (8-7).

• Jake Goldberg had 10 points, five assists and four rebounds for Williams in its 75-35 loss to MacDuffie. Chris Trammell had nine points and 10 rebounds for Williams (3-13).

• Jelini Giddings had 10 points and eight rebounds in St. Thomas More's 60-32 loss to Hyde-Woodstock. Bernard Bennett had nine points for the Chancellors (8-10).

H.S. swimming

• Sam Magna won the 200 individual medley, Thomas Whittico won the 100 butterfly and teamed with Yuiry Harisymov and Mike Li to win the 200 freestyle relay as East Lyme beat Williams, 86-83. East Lyme is 11-3. Matthew Mooers won the 50 and 100 freestyle for Williams and Caius Mergy won the 500 freestyle.

H.S. hockey

• Blake Biancamano and James Stowe each scored for St. Bernard-Bacon Academy in its 4-2 loss to Amity of Woodbridge. Scott Steele made 28 saves for St. Bernard-Bacon Academy (6-7).
