We all realize that motion pictures are a big ol’ fantasy world, but nothing jolts viewers out of a story more than when a real, honest-to-goodness job is portrayed unrealistically.
You know, Keanu Reeves’ doctor in "Something’s Gotta Give." Julia Roberts’ hooker in "Pretty Woman." All the policemen in every "Police Academy" movie.
And, most recently, Maggie Gyllenhaal’s reporter in "Crazy Heart."
She is a neophyte journalist, granted, but the first thing she does upon meeting her subject, debauched country singer Bad Blake, is to flirt like crazy. She asks questions in a kittenish purr. She lowers her head and lifts her eyes, glancing over a saucily raised shoulder, as if she’s in a photo shoot for Details magazine.
As if that’s not enough to get you reprimanded by HR, she ends up sitting in bed with Bad Blake — fully clothed, but still — doing the rest of the interview.
That has not happened to any real reporter I know.
Later, after they date for a long time and then break up, she interviews him again. I guess she still hasn’t heard of the phrase "conflict of interest."
What do you think is the worst job portrayal on film?
