In March 2007 I submitted a letter regarding the proper displaying of the American flag. It hurt so bad to see the flag desecrated that I went as far as the U.S. Congress, to Joe Courtney's office.
It is amazing that three years later a visitor from South Carolina submits a letter and responses continue to arise. ("A torn courthouse flag is no laughing matter," Feb 26.) Why did it take that long for people to understand that the flag is part of each of us? From battlefields such as Fort Sumter during the Civil War, to Iwo Jima where 6,821 Marines died, it has been proudly raised, and today it is flown every day.
It is time to continue to respond, to understand the pride and to honor Old Glory and the freedom it allows every day. This should be done by city governments, schools, municipalities, citizens' own displays and more. It should be done especially for the men and women who are prepared to give their lives to protect the ideals it stands for.
I salute The Day for printing letters concerning such an important part of the American way of life.
