I am commenting on Richard Blumenthal's statement, "Businesses welcome competition and a level playing field and want fair enforcement." ("They said it," March 3.) What a joke. What a typical politician.

A few years back local bar owners, with myself the main plaintiff, brought a lawsuit against the state over the smoking ban. We requested "a level playing field" and equal protection under the law.

Both were challenged by Mr. Blumenthal and eventually denied. If Mr. Blumenthal turned a deaf ear to our pleas then, why would he do differently as a senator?

Still we have no "level playing field." Casinos and private clubs, our competition, are allowed to let patrons smoke. Where is the "fair enforcement and level playing field"?

Oh, the political winds have changed. Imagine that.
