I commend the author of the letter to the editor titled "Why not drill our oil and sell it to pay debt?" published Feb. 10. The letter proposes a means for paying our current national debt.
Socialistic government-oriented solutions being proposed to cure our economic woes will work no better than Franklin Roosevelt's efforts in the late 1930s. He did not end the Great Depression - World War II ended it.
The epic effort of winning the war on two fronts in five years enabled us to develop an unequaled industrial base for about 60 years, which ensured we were the world's preeminent power.
A similar program to achieve an energy-independent nation would restore America to its rightful position and improve citizens' lives.
The writer cites estimated reserves of the Bakken Field, only one of many sites, which, in total, show the U.S. may be the leading country in known reserves. I recommend that anyone interested in this read former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's book, "Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less." It is handbook for slashing gas prices and solving our energy crisis. Mr. Gingrich enabled President Clinton to claim a balanced budget upon leaving office in 1999.
