Much has dominated the news concerning health plans, earthquakes, politics and budget concerns. I am afraid there is a lack of recognition or awareness of our military at war in Afghanistan. Those who have family there are acutely aware, but the public is seemingly not affected by our being at war.
In connection with Operation Moshtarack, a massive offensive on the Taliban stronghold of Marjah, I have seen pictures of U.S. infantry members digging trenches to serve as sleeping arrangements. I have read of female soldiers deployed overseas who stop drinking water after 7 p.m. to reduce the odds of being raped if they have to use the bathroom at night. The instances of extraordinary hardship are many.
All the while, certain pundits are recounting how the war in Afghanistan cannot be won. Surely this is not a thought which offers any consolation while walking through mine-strewn fields or sloshing through poppy fields watered by irrigation canals.
More attention needs to be directed to the needs of our troops and to an appreciation of what they are enduring.
The least we can do is to increase contributions to worthy military causes such as United Service Organizations, Disabled American Veterans or others.
