Calhoun welcomes NIT bid

After taking a couple days off, UConn will resume practice Saturday to prepare for a possible NIT game.

Coach Jim Calhoun said today he'll accept a bid if offered when the NIT announces its 32-team field Sunday night. First round games start as early as Tuesday.

All signs point to UConn being included in the NIT field.

Calhoun needed time to think about his program's next step following a dismal performance in Tuesday's Big East Tournament first round loss to St. John's.

He decided he's not ready to stop playing yet.

"The easy way would be to just don't go," Calhoun said. "That's not the way I've led my life. We'll take on the fight. If it fails, it fails. But we're going to get involved in the fight."

As far as his approach, Calhoun plans to stick with his regular rotation. Seniors Jerome Dyson, Stanley Robinson and Gavin Edwards will play, but Calhoun won't hesitate to use his reserves.

He hopes that Dyson busts out of his funk.

"I've watched Jerome Dyson for the better part of four years and there are certain games that he has not played particularly well for us. I thought he was over-focused and really didn't know how to get out of whatever he was in."

The UConn coaching staff is increasing recruiting efforts in attempt to bring in at least one more quality recruit. The announcement that Calhoun is preparing to sign a four-year contract extension will cut down on the rumors about his future.

"It helps everybody," Calhoun said. "It helps all of us understand what we're trying to do and what we need to do. ... We've got three guys committed already and we need to get a couple more guys to commit to come in."
