Preston - A special town meeting was held Thursday night to discuss a resolution to appropriate $259,965 for costs associated with the oil spill at Preston Veterans Memorial School last November.
First Selectmen Bob Congdon said that around 25 residents were in attendence during the hourlong meeting, and that there was a significant amount of discussion on how the oil spill happened and how the town can make sure it doesn't happen again.
A PowerPoint presentation was given by licensed environmental professionals from both Weston Engineering and Gardner Environmental Partners on how the oil spill happened, how oil affects the ground water and how to properly clean all of it up.
"The importance of this is the fact that this money has to be spent because we have to clean up the oil. If we don't clean it up on time, the cost and liability will be far greater than it is now," Congdon said.
The town will vote to approve or oppose the resolution March 23.
The Day hosted a web chat with New London Mayor Daryl J. Finizio to discuss the beginning of his new administration and news out of the city's police department.
