I received a letter, like most everyone in our area, from the Census Bureau. It says the following:
"Results from the 2010 Census will be used to help each community get its fair share of government funds for highways, schools, health facilities, and many other programs you and your neighbors need. Without a complete, accurate census, your community may not receive its fair share."
I was a little shocked as the constitutional purpose of the census (where the census is defined) is to determine taxes owed to the federal government from each particular state, and to determine the number of representatives in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The problem with our country is that our own government has so perverted the purpose of our Constitution. The census is not about getting our fair share. Our federal taxes are intended to run the federal government and to pay for the common defense, not to collect from rich states and dole out to the poor states. State governments gave rights to the federal government by the Constitution; the federal government did not give the rights to the states.
Our federal government needs to stop growing, stop absorbing more of our individual and states' rights and to adhere to the letter and intent of our Constitution.
The Day hosted a web chat with New London Mayor Daryl J. Finizio to discuss the beginning of his new administration and news out of the city's police department.
With the Valentine's Day holiday approaching, we wanted to see if any of our readers ever received a Valentine's gift that was memorably bad.
In the past two weeks our Facebook fans have won tickets to the CT Tigers, Newport Winefest and Mystic Seaport. Become a fan of The Day on Facebook for access to these contests, breaking news, TheDay.com's best features and more!
