So what are we talking here? Broccoli at a Bond flick? Tofu during "Star Trek"?
The head of Sony Pictures wants movie theaters to sell healthier snacks.
Michael Lynton promoted the idea at this week’s ShoWest convention of theater owners. He figures that it’ll help fight obesity (which is all the rage these days) and that it’s something viewers actually want.
He pointed out that two-thirds of people surveyed at 26 theaters said they’d likely buy healthy snacks if they were sold at cinemas.
Lynton was quick to note he wouldn’t expect the old standbys — popcorn, candy, soda — to go the way of the silent films.
But he thinks they should be joined by, say, fruit cups, veggies with dip, yogurt, granola bars and baked chips.
Boy, does that NOT sounds enticing.
When I eat at the movie theater, I’m strictly a popcorn girl. And, dammit, I like popcorn that’s drenched in butter and snow-topped with salt. (I’d definitely not pony up the dough for the unbuttered, air-popped popcorn that Lynton is suggesting.)
I do reserve my snacking for lighter movies. Or longer ones — "Lord of the Rings" and "Unforgiven" ran so long, I had to get to the snack bar before I fainted from low blood sugar levels.
To me, movie-going is an experience that’s all about entertainment and indulging. I don’t want to nosh on healthy snacks there.
If theaters want to offer that for other people, good for them. But, for heaven’s sake, don’t ban butter on the popcorn.
What’s your favorite movie-watching snack? Would you buy healthier options?
