In response to the article titled "Flags woes at parks just part of funding issue," published March 11, I need to respond to some comments about some legislators.
Our local legislators are aware of the issues Fort Griswold faces and have worked with the Friends of Fort Griswold, the Department of Environmental Protection and other organizations in the Groton area to help us with much-needed funding for repairs to the fort.
The Groton Monument has been deteriorating for years. The mortar has been falling out of the joints at an alarming rate. State Sen. Andrew Maynard, state Rep. Edward Moukawsher and city of Groton Mayor Dennis Popp have been excellent supporters. Without their dedication, funding for work on the monument may not have stayed in the budget. Sen. Maynard secured the $500,000 bonding project to fix the Groton Monument at Fort Griswold; repairs will soon begin.
The governor's office needs to hear that a flag for a Revolutionary War battleground, where one of the 20 most deadly battles of the Revolutionary War was fought, was cut from the state purchasing budget.
Please contact the governor's office and all state legislators to request that funding for American flags be put back in the budget.
Editor's note: The writer is president of Friends of Fort Griswold.
