If you're like me, you probably believe Natural Gas, which included Uriah Heep's Mark Clarke, Humble Pie's Jerry Shirley and Badfinger's Joey Molland, was easily the finest rock supergroup of all time. As such, there's no point in speculating further about the concept of big shots from various bands getting together for purposes of truly cosmic rockness.
And yet … the truth of the matter is I never heard Natural Gas. I just thought it was sort of an unfortunate name.
Anyhoo, the word hits that Joe Bonamassa, Glenn Hughes, Jason Bonham and Derek Sherinian have been writing and recording together. Supergroup-ness! They were going to be called Black Country, after the part of England Bonham and Hughes hail from, but apparently some other band already had that name and threatened to sue.
It's not true that the pissed-off, original Black Country band was comprised of former members of Trapeze, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Dream Theater, although that woulda been funny in a which-supergroup-was-here-first? context.
Well, whatever the Bonamassa/Hughes outfit will ultimately be called, I look forward to it — even if they don't cover any Natural Gas songs. Not sure if or when a CD will be released, but here's a tune called "One Last Soul," which the band played onstage after a Bonamassa show. I like it. Sort of a pedestrian opening riff, but it gets better. What do you think?
