Guys: Many's the time I have pondered the popularity of the indie band Pavement, which has reunited and whose members are presumably a lot wealthier now than when ensconced in their respective post-career periods known as no-longer-in-Pavement.

Not that I'd ever suggest they're doing it for the money — they're doing it for the money -- though I don't blame them.

My purpose today is not to continue to pound the Pavement, so to speak. I've already done that and even I'm tired of it.

Rather, I'd like to point something out to you, Dan, Matt and Joel — assuredly three of the most fervent Pavement fans I've run across. Because I think you'll get a kick out of this.

It's no secret that I consider Porcupine Tree the best band in the world. Sort of the anti-Pavement, if you will. P-Tree leader Steven Wilson is one of the great musical geniuses in rock history.

I'm also grateful to Wilson for the personal playlist he posts on his web site, wherein he lists the 10 albums currently in heavy rotation for his own listening pleasure. I have been turned on to many compelling and frequently unknown artists from Wilson's Playlist, and I seek it out regularly.

Imagine my surprise, then, when I checked it out earlier this week and, right there at position #2, just behind the brilliant new album by Shearwater, is Pavement's Slanted and Enchanted.

Well, I never claimed to be as smart as Steven Wilson (or, for that matter, Joel, Dan and Matt), and so I wearily went back and listened — one more time — to Slanted and Enchanted.

Hmm. I still hate it.

But … Dan, Matt and Joel: I hope you take some small pleasure in knowing that you guys and Steven Wilson are artistically aligned on this matter of Pavement.

So take that, me!
