Alaska and Hawaii are the 49th and 50th states in the United States.
The Travel section featured an article on West Quoddy Head, Maine. ("West Quoddy Head: Sunrise comes early," Aug. 29.)
In the article was the statement: "This little spot is one of three in Maine where the sun first rises in the United States." It is joined by the statement: "If the easternmost point in the U.S. is called West Quoddy Head ..." a statement that must have been written by someone who missed geography class. Alaska can claim to be the most northern, eastern and western of the states.
Hawaii is the most southern. The Aleutian Islands straddle the 180th meridian.
