St. Bernard High School has been named the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Michael's Cup winner for Class S, athletic director Bill Buscetto said Wednesday.

The Michael's Cup Committee recognizes programs that "continually provide exemplary programs," including athletic participation, academic success, trained and professional personnel and sportsmanship, in addition to athletic achievement.

"Obviously this is an outstanding award that the entire St. Bernard community takes pride in," Buscetto said in a press release. "We try to create a culture of sportsmanship, integrity and fairness, all while trying to compete at the highest level possible.

"A great deal of credit goes to our coaches, but the main reason we were selected is because of our kids. They not only have won several conference championships, gone to state championship games, but they have done it all while representing themselves, their families, St. Bernard and the ECC in a very sportsmanlike manner."

Buscetto is a 1991 St. Bernard graduate who was recently elected to the school's athletic hall of fame and serves as the Saints' baseball coach. Both his children, daughter Jordan and son Bill, are part of the athletic program at the school.

St. Bernard will be honored Sept. 23 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington along with the Class LL, L and M winners.
