State police charge 72 with drunken driving

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut state police say they charged 72 people with drunken driving and issued 1,940 speeding tickets during beefed-up enforcement over Labor Day weekend.

Troopers also responded to 265 accidents, including two fatal crashes and 53 with injuries during the enforcement operation, which began at midnight Friday and ended at midnight Monday.

State police wrote another 283 tickets for failure to wear seat belts and issued more than 3,400 citations for driving while using cell phones, tailgating and other violations.

The numbers do not include arrests and tickets issued by local police departments.
