I was not surprised to read the article titled "Hyslop contends racial issues lie behind plan to sell Riverside Park," published Sept. 9.
Anyone who thinks that the proximity of the park to low-income housing has nothing to do with the potential sale has his or her head in the sand. Racism is alive and well in New London and most of it is hidden. Most of it is behind closed doors, while people converse with their own kind.
Just a few weeks ago I overheard a conversation between two women standing outside our house, as one said to the other, "Black people own this house." I asked myself: Why would someone make that comment? The answer: Hidden racism. I guess in their minds, minorities aren't supposed to live in nice houses.
