The "tank" is coming back to the Armory. Just spoke with Colonel John Whitford of the CT National Guard, who informed The Sound that the military personnel carrier that was installed by the town's Korean War Vets as a memorial and has sat in front of the Branford Armory since the 1970's will be placed back on its concrete pad sometime after Sept. 10.
The "tank" was moved out last week, to join a historic property collection displayed at Camp Niantic, according to Colonel Whitford. That didn't sit well with John Sudac of the Korean War Vets of Branford, who contacted Colonel Whitford on Aug. 10 to find out why the memorial had been removed. Sudac also contacted The Sound. Col. Whitford told the Sound that the vehicle was federal property of the National Guard and no notification was needed regarding its removal. At that time, Colonel Whitford also told Sudac there was a chance a replacement memorial might be considered for the site, with National Guard approval, if Sudac wanted to pursue that route.
Today, Col. Whitford followed up with a phone call to explain that, since learning of the "value" the vehicle held for the people of Branford, his commanding officer had decided to send it back to town. It will be refurbished, repainted and returned soon.
