Shortly before 7 p.m. on Thurs. Aug. 25, phones at homes all over Branford rang with a call from the town's emergency notification system. A recorded message from First Selectman Anthony "Unk" DaRos followed, urging everyone to prepare for Hurricane Irene, a Category III storm now tracking up the coast toward New England.
DaRos noted all town agencies are prepared for the storm and that Branford is actively monitoring Hurricane Irene. He said Hurricane Irene is expected to begin effecting Branford by evening of Sat. Aug. 27. At that point, it should be at the strength of a Category II hurricane, including 120 mile per hour winds and rains bringing a possible 10 inches of water, according to the message from DaRos.
"At this time, there is no mandatory evacuation," said DaRos in the message; but added residents will be notified if that decision changes and that those living in flood plain areas "must consider" the possibility.
DaRos reminded residents to check www.branford-ct.gov for the town's Emergency Guide information (click on Office of Emergency Management, blue box at left). Available for download are documents including Branford's Evacuation and Shelter Guide, how to evacuate and where to go for shelter, and Emergency Preparedness Guide 2010. The guide information is also available at town libraries.
"The main goal is to keep everyone safe," said DaRos, adding he wanted to let residents know, "Branford is prepared for the storm."
