Providence, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's population is declining at a steeper rate than any other state.

New 2011 census estimates released Wednesday show the Ocean State's population decreased by 1,300 people from April 2010 to July of this year, a decline of .12 percent.

Two other states — Michigan and Maine — also lost population but at a slower rate.

Overall, the U.S. population grew by 2.8 million, reaching 311.6 million people.

The numbers indicate that Washington, D.C., grew the fastest, with a 2.7 percent population increase. Texas was next-fastest growing, followed by Utah, Alaska, Colorado and North Dakota

The U.S. Census Bureau says Rhode Island's population as of July 1 was 1,051,302.
