2011 top stories: Stosz helms Coast Guard Academy

Published December 26. 2011 4:00AM

Rear Adm. Sandra L. Stosz became the first woman to lead one of the nation's military academies when she took over as the U.S. Coast Guard Academy's superintendent June 3.

Coast Guard Commandant Adm. Robert J. Papp Jr. said then that Stosz was opening "hopefully one of the few remaining doors" as the first female superintendent of a service academy.

But, he said, she was chosen for the job because she is a leader with a variety of experiences in the service, not because of her gender. Stosz spent 12 years at sea and commanded two cutters. She was the director of Reserve and Leadership and she led the service's recruit training center.

Stosz graduated from the academy in 1982, the third class to include women.

She has said that the real measure of success when it comes to integrating women in the Coast Guard will be when she is looked at as the 40th superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy- and not as the first female superintendent.
