At some point down the road it would be interesting to look at what became of all the closed Tim Horton coffee shops. One of the more interesting reuses has happened in Mystic, where Wide World of Bagels has opened.
While Christmas shopping I stopped in for a quick lunch, figuring I'd grab a sandwich on a bagel. I was pleasantly surprised when I found an extensive menu of breakfast and lunch offerings.
For breakfast, you can order breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, breakfast burritos and omelettes. Of course there's bagels, too. For lunch you can choose from salads, hot dogs, burgers, chicken wings, paninis and wraps.
The place is small — a handful of tables for dining — and I wondered how they could ever handle this menu. Maybe they bit off more than they could chew and should have concentrated on bagels.
But I must report that my smoked turkey and jack cheese panini, with bacon, roasted red peppers and ranch dressing, was as good as any I've had at Panera. And two women at the next table seemed delighted with their Philly cheesesteak.
(Another surprise was that this is a chain; it had the feel of a family run place.)
At $6.95, the panini would have been a better value with a bag of chips, but WWB is a place I will stop in again when in Mystic.
