Top Stories of 2011: Tropical Storm Irene

Published December 28. 2011 4:00AM

Tropical Storm Irene left millions of residents across the state in the dark for more than a week and its heavy winds resulted in thousands of wires and downed trees dangling along roadways and resting on the tops of houses.

While Irene didn't hit the state as a hurricane, the tropical storm still made for a messy end to summer and prompted many schools to postpone their first day.

With spotty cell phone service after Irene, residents in North Stonington and Ledyard had trouble communicating with the outside world while residents in other towns, including Groton, Montville and Preston, lined up for showers at emergency stations and local schools.

During and following the storm, Connecticut Light & Power received local and federal scrutiny for the way it responded to the widespread outages.
