UConn announced tonight that freshman Ryan Boatright will be held out of action indefinitely while UConn works with the NCAA to review his eligibility.
Boatright will be allowed to sit on the bench for Saturday’s game at Notre Dame but will not suit up. He will continue to practice with the team.
This is the second time this season that Boatright has been sidelined. He missed the first six games of the season after the NCAA suspended him for accepting an improper benefit. The issue concerned Boatright receiving an airline ticket during his AAU days.
New information provided to the NCAA also deals with his pre-UConn days.
UConn learned of the problem after arriving in South Bend on Friday. There is no timetable for an NCAA decision on Boatright’s status.
It is a significant loss for the Huskies.
Boatright filled the valuable role as first guard off the bench. He’s averaged 26.4 minutes in 10 games, contributing 10.2 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists.
The Huskies have played some of their best basketball with a three-guard lineup, combining Boatright, sophomores Shabazz Napier and Jeremy Lamb.
Now Napier is the only true point guard on the roster. Walk-on Brendan Allen, a freshman guard from Windsor, is a possible back-up option.
The news also spoils Boatright’s homecoming game. He’s from Aurora, Ill., which is located about 130 miles from South Bend. About 400 friends and family are expected to attend the game.
