Calhoun makes signifcant lineup changes

UConn coach Jim Calhoun is making significant lineup changes for Wednesday night’s Big East game at No. 14 Georgetown.

After arriving in Washington, D.C., Calhoun told reporters Tuesday night that freshman Ryan Boatright and sophomore Roscoe Smith will start, replacing sophomore point guard Shabazz Napier and junior power forward Alex Oriakhi, two team captains.

Calhoun hopes the shake-up will ignite a sluggish UConn attack that’s produced an average of 57 points per game during a season-high three game losing streak. The Huskies had a season low for points in Sunday’s 50-48 loss to Notre Dame in Hartford.

It will be Boatright’s first start. He returned to game action on Sunday after sitting out three games while the NCAA reviewed his eligibility.

Napier, who is averaging 14.3 points and six assists, will come off the bench for the first time this season. He played a key reserve role last year for the national championship Huskies.

Smith will start for the sixth time this season. Oriakhi has had a disappointing season, averaging just 6.5 points and 4.9 rebounds compared to 9.6 points and 8.7 rebounds last season.

Here’s my take: It’s a good move.

Calhoun had to do something. The Huskies, who’ve lost five of their last seven games, need to stop their freefall.

Both Napier and Oriakhi will continue to play important roles. The Huskies will struggle to qualify for post-season play unless their team captains play well down the stretch.
