Hand's Danny Ives and Kara McHugh are two of 10 student-athletes from five high schools that have been named The SportsCenter of Connecticut/Southern Connecticut Conference Scholar Athletes of the Month for December.
Ives, a captain of the Tigers' Class L state champion football team, has been an impressive student in the classroom. Ives sports a 3.4 grade-point average and is active in school activities such as the "Reading for Character" program. Ives was a three-year starter on the gridiron at linebacker, helping the Tigers to a perfect 13-0 record, plus the SCC Division I East and state Class L title in 2011.
Hand football coach Steve Filippone said, "Danny is the consummate servant leader. He has no ego. All that matters to him is winning and making the men around him better."
One of the top three-sport (soccer, basketball, and lacrosse) athletes in the SCC, McHugh has been a standout student in the classroom, ranking among the top in her class. McHugh is a three-sport captain and has earned All-SCC honors in both soccer and lacrosse.
Hand Athletic director Craig Semple said, "Kara is a tremendous student-athlete who has earned the respect and admiration of not only her teammates, but opposing players and coaches as well."
