Water conservation in Connecticut is not a topic that receives much press, but I believe that more people should have access to information on water conservation and what they can do to support clean water.
Connecticut has aging sewer systems that leak waste into our waters; beachcombers find plastic trash among their shells; and humans have been using more water than nature can replenish.
Save the Sound, a program under the Connecticut Fund for the Environment, recently released a report including 10 things ordinary citizens can do to positively influence the health of Long Island Sound, and these steps can be applied to many water resources throughout the state.
Small personal changes, such as using organic fertilizer to prevent chemicals from flowing into waterways via stormwater drains or disposing of litter properly while at the beach, are easy steps that anyone can take. Other suggestions include maintaining septic tanks and becoming involved with land trust or watershed associations.
I would like to emphasize the idea that individuals can affect change in our local waterways. Anything positive that one person does creates a cleaner water environment.
