Panic is rampant in Red Sox Nation.
After an 0-6 start last season and the worst collapse in September in the history of baseball, the Red Sox have started off the season getting swept in Detroit.
Overreaction with a Boston fanbase will always happen both when the team is doing great or awful. I promise it's way too early to come to extreme conclusions as there are 159 games left to play. I have to be honest though and say I was frustrated like the rest watching these games. It's not so much them losing, but how it's happened.
Game #1 - Bullpen blown save that ends in a walk off
Game #2 - Josh Beckett gives up 5 home runs in one game
Game #3 - Bullpen blows 3 run save then blows 2 run save that ends in a walk off
The bullpen is clearly a problem even though it's early with the new "closer" Alfredo Aceves yet to record an out and Mark Melancon yet to throw a decent pitch. Bobby Valentine is handcuffed in the sense that the talent is not that great in the pen and it will be interesting to see if these two can't get it done what the next move will be.
Speaking off Bobby V, how about sitting Youkilis in the third game of the season for Nick Punto??!! Granted Punto had a good day at the plate (little shaky in the field) but benching a guy like Youk unless he's injured is a bold move, especially this early in the season. I didn't agree with it because I think it shows panic by Valentine after two games to sit one of your everyday players. You can bench Cody Ross after going hitless for two games, but I'm sorry, you don't do that with a guy like Kevin Youkilis.
The Sox once again are dealing with much adversity to start the season and look for thier first win in Toronto beginning tonight with Felix Doubrant on the hill followed by the beginning of Daniel Bard the starter. All I can say is things better turn around quick or it should be an interesting home opener celebrating the 100 years of Fenway Park.
