A grinder joint that's a cut above

The Crystal Mall is looking fine after a $10 million upgrade. With new carpeting and tiles it has a much brighter feel. And it’s nice to see fewer empty storefronts than over the past few years.

The food court got a makeover, too, but the big news there is the addition of Charley’s Grilled Subs. Charley’s is different than some sub chains in that everything is grilled to order. No pre-cooked steak or chicken looking for a microwave.

And everything is grilled, including the Italian sub I ordered (pepperoni, ham, turkey, Italian seasoning, provolone). Charley’s prides itself on its Philly Cheesesteak, which I look forward to trying.

You can order up some fries, with or without cheddar cheese and/or bacon, and fresh lemonade. I was happy with both.

I sometimes run out to the mall to pick up a shirt or tie, or maybe a needed tool at Sear’s. Now, I’ll time it so I visit Charley’s for lunch.

Hopefully, the mall will continue to upgrade its food court offerings. I'd love to see a Johnny Rockets.

Have you tried Charley's? What's your favorite food court restaurant?
