Roundup: Montville's Wattely second in New England in the 100 meters

Saco, Maine - Shatajah Wattely finished her distinguished Montville High School career Saturday by earning All-New England honors in two events at the New England Interscholastic Track and Field Championship.

Wattely, who broke her school record with a 12.03 in the preliminaries of the 100 meters, finished second in the finals of the event in 12.13 seconds. Shellyann Lindo of McMahon in Norwalk, who was third when Wattely won the State Open title in the 100 earlier in the week, finished first in 11.75 seconds.

Wattely was fifth in the 200 Saturday in 24.99 seconds and ran as a part of the Indians 4x100 relay, which also qualified for the meet. The relay, consisting of Alana Lopes, Natalie Bowens, Lauren Hess and Wattely, was 11th in 50.49.

"Yes, she was happy," Montville coach Joel Finnegan said of Wattely's performance. "It's been a wonderful four years. I feel as though she accomplished a great deal. There was a little disappointment in not winning, but the girl who beat her ran a great, great race."

In the boys' meet, the highlight was a third-place finish by the Waterford 4x100 relay team, consisting of Bishme Sheppard, Y-Kim Sheppard, Dakota Jones and Chris Jones. The Lancers finished in 43.11 seconds.

Among the other top local girls' finishers, Norwich Free Academy's Brianna Lenehan was eighth in the 800 (2:15.43) and ran a leg of the Wildcats fifth-place 4x400 team (3:57.50). Lenehan was joined by MiaLynne Park, Camille McKenzie and Dyshelle Pemberton in the relay.

Ledyard's Kylie Fustini was sixth in the discus at 124 feet, 5 inches.

NFA's boys' 4x800 team, with Dan Cardin, Derek French, Kyle Liang and Andrew Weiler, was 10th in 8:08.45.

Boys' tennis

• Old Lyme's Morgan White, the recent runner-up in the Class S singles tournament, will face Jack Meyer of Fairfield Ludlowe in the opening round of the State Open today at Conard in West Hartford. Action begins at 1 p.m. The tourney was scheduled to start on Saturday, but wet conditions forced CIAC officials to move play to today.

16-18 Babe Ruth

• Trent Brennan led off the 10th inning with a double and came around to score the winning run in Waterford's 4-3 victory over East Lyme in the season opener for both teams. Brennan had two hits and Saxon Herbert pitched three scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory. Lee Brake homered for East Lyme and he and Slater Gregory had two hits each.
