East Hartford — New London cornerback Jevon Elmore had three interceptions, including one at the 1-yard line when Rhode Island was a potential go-ahead score with less than a minute remaining, as Connecticut held on for a 14-8 victory in the annual Governors’ Cup football game at Rentschler Field.

Connecticut beat Rhode Island for the 10th straight year, but needed a pair of second-half touchdown passes from Xavier’s Pat D’Amato to Windsor’s Aaron Berardino to wipe out an 8-0 halftime deficit.

The game featured the top graduating high school seniors from each state.

Elmore’s former New London teammate, tailback Kyle McKinnon, led Connecticut in rushing with 88 yards on eight carries, including a 63-yard burst. He also had one reception for 17 yards.

Three other local players participated — East Lyme offensive lineman Tim Farina, Ledyard linebacker Dallas Smith and Valley Regional/Old Lyme defensive back Jimmy Fairfield-Sonn.
