• The No. 1 singles player for the East Lyme team which finished as the Class M state runner-up, Joan Li went through the regular season undefeated without dropping a set and earned the No. 2 seed in the ECC tournament. A junior, Li reached the semifinals of the league tournament for the second straight year and later won two matches at the State Open, earning all-conference and Class M all-state honors. Li is the recipient of the Dartmouth College Book Award and was a 2012 Governor's Scholar. She is a repeat All-Area selection.
• Sophia Shi was the No. 2 singles player for East Lyme, one of three freshmen in the singles lineup as the Vikings finished the regular season unbeaten (15-0, ECC Large Division champions) and went all the way to the Class M state championship match. Shi didn't drop a set during the regular season and was named an ECC all-star. She came back from an ankle injury that caused her to miss the ECC tournament in time to compete in the state tournament, winning all three of her matches en route to the finals. An honor roll student, Shi received awards in English, world history, science and was most outstanding in math.
• Stonington junior Chloe Slater played in the signature match of the season in eastern Connecticut, finishing as the ECC runner-up to teammate Annika Burgess in a near three and a half hour match won by Burgess 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3. Slater, the No. 3 seed after an unbeaten regular season, trailed 5-2 in the second set in that match and 5-2 in the second-set tiebreaker. An All-ECC selection, she helped lead the Bears (19-1, ECC Medium Division champs) to their seventh straight Class S state championship match. Slater is also an All-ECC and All-Area recipient for Stonington's ECC champion field hockey team, the secretary of the National Honor Society, vice president of the student government and a high honor student.
• Sherry Yang's high school tennis debut for East Lyme resulted in a quarterfinal berth in the ECC tournament and an appearance along with the Vikings in the Class M state championship match. Yang, a freshman, was an All-ECC selection who was undefeated at No. 3 singles during the regular season.
• East Lyme's Liz Miller and Katherine Wu made an unlikely doubles tandem, Miller a senior who played No. 2 singles the year before and Wu a quiet freshman who could have easily been intimidated by the pairing. The team made it work, however, receiving the No. 2 seed in the ECC tournament and going on to win the league doubles championship 6-4, 7-6 over top-seeded Waterford. Miller, a part of East Lyme's back-to-back volleyball state championships, is an honor roll student who will attend UConn. Wu is a high honor student and a member of the French Honor Society. Both players received All-ECC honors.
• Waterford seniors Katie Hudson and Casey Corrado capped their careers with a runner-up finish in the ECC doubles draw, going unbeaten during the regular season at 18-0 and earning the top seed in the ECC tournament. Hudson and Corrado, team co-captains, co-MVP selections for the Lancers and All-ECC honorees, also reached the second round of the State Open. Corrado, who will attend Tufts, is a National Honor Society member and a CAPT Scholar. Hudson is a high honor student, CAPT Scholar, Marine Scholar, captain of the National Ocean Science Bowl Team and co-chair of the Alternate Energy Feasibility Study Group. She will attend Northeastern University.
• ECC Small Division all-stars Michelle Valliere and Maggie Tarbox of Lyman Memorial were the No. 4 seed in the league tournament and reached the semifinals there after a three-set victory in the quarters. Valliere, a sophomore, and Tarbox, a freshman, both also play volleyball and basketball and are honor roll students.
