Mates of State married to the music

Indie pop seems to provide the ideal musical parameters for those husband-and-wife teams who decide to form two-person bands together.

Not sure why that is, exactly, or even what it means (other than, golly, Pomplamoose really seems to have inspired murderous thoughts in most of the human race).

On the other hand, one of the most popular, polished and adventuresome of the Mr. and Mrs.

Indie-Pop combos is Mates of State, performing a free show Friday in the Mohegan Sun Wolf Den. Keyboardist/vocalist Kori Gardner and hubby/drummer/vocalist Jason Hammel, for all their media-mandated "indie rock" cred, actually channel a lot of the finest moments of '80s synth-pop. In that spirit, their 2011 album, "Mountaintops," proves they still have plenty of energy and hooks.
